A blow-dry brush set is genuinely easy to use — but a few small habits can be the difference between a flat, dropped-out finish and a bouncy, salon-worthy blowout. Here are the seven most common mistakes, and how to fix them.
1. Rolling up hair that isn't fully dry
Damp hair won't hold shape and drops fast. Rough-dry to around 70–80% first, then blow-dry each section with the brush until it's 100% dry — especially at the roots — before you roll it up to set.
2. Skipping heat protectant
Even though a blow-dry brush is gentler than tongs, you're still using a hairdryer. A quick mist of heat protectant keeps your hair healthy and shiny.
3. Not working in sections
Trying to style too much hair at once gives you uneven, patchy volume. Clip the top half up and work in neat sections from underneath — it's faster and looks better.
4. Blasting one spot with direct heat
Holding the dryer still and hot in one place is harsh on your hair and uneven. Keep the dryer on a medium heat and moving over the barrel.
5. Skipping the cool-down
This is the big one. Unwinding while the section is still warm makes the curl drop straight out. Let each section cool completely on the barrel before you unwind — that's what sets the shape.
6. Using the wrong barrel size
Too-large barrels on short hair (or too-small on long hair) fight you the whole way. Match your barrel to your length — see our guide to choosing the right barrel size.
7. Overloading each section
Cramming too much hair onto one barrel means the heat can't get through and the curl won't form. Thinner sections wrap more neatly and hold far better.
Avoid these and you're most of the way to a blowout that lasts. For more, read how to use a blow-dry brush set.
